These are two separate replies to a little discussion that is going on on my friends site at www.xanga.com/xqlz.com. It’s mainly about using secular songs in a worship service. The main band being discussed is U2.

Hypocrisy is the problem.
Hypocrisy is the number one cause of atheism.
They say one thing “I will sing, sing a new song” but then they do not live, or even appear to at least be trying to live, as Christians. How am I supposed to believe those words are genuine? How can I support a band that epitomizes why Christianity is a joke in today’s society? “Sure you say one thing but your actions tell the truth on you”-FIF
Sure, God can take anything and make it good. Hence how God can use secular music. I guess the question is whether you feel led as a worship leader to use a hypocrites words to praise his name, just as you could use voodoo drums to praise Him?

We are all hypocrites to some extent and I agree with everything on the count of worship. I still respect a worship leader’s decision to not include such music. I don’t think that the answer is black and white. Different situations, audiences, etc.. need to be addressed, and what is good for one group may not be for another. Someone may recognize a U2 song and that may hinder their worship. That wouldn’t be a mature view, but a worship leader does have to keep his audience, mature or not, in mind. Also is the question of whether you want to promote a band that does not show a Godly lifestyle. Which brings us back to hypocrisy.

I wrote about hypocrisy in the church a few weeks ago, so if you really wanna know how I feel you can check it out at

I’m just trying to say that I agree with both sides.

Hey Scot! Just thought I'd drop a line and let you know I thoroughly enjoy your theological "debates" or "arguments".. and, I also agree with what you've said about most points. Great minds think alike.. haha, right. Cya lata man!

Does the truth have any bearing on which way you go?
