Summary:
The fact that we are able to doubt our existence proves that a soul must exist separately from the body in order to have such a thought. If we contained perfect thoughts then we would be God, however since we have imperfect thoughts something greater must have created us. Our soul provides us with the understanding required to process the information we take in with our senses. Dreams and one’s imagination may contain truth or traces of truth however “whatever truth our ideas possess should infallibly be found in those we have while awake rather than in our dreams. God has established natural laws which would be true throughout the universe. Everything we see is a reaction to God’s natural laws and purely material things have developed gradually under these laws to what we recognize today. The heart brings heat to the body through blood which is the source of life for the body. Man may be able to create machines similar to man but they will never be able to have full use of language nor reasoning ability equal to that of even an unintelligent human. Animals don’t have reasoning abilities, language, or a soul.
Quote:
“there is none that more readily leads weak minds away from the straight path of virtue than to imagine that the soul of beasts has the same nature as ours.”
Question:
Would Descartes subscribe to the “Gap” evolution theory, pure creationism, or the big bang theory with God as the original cause?
