Summary:
Milton starts off by asking the Muse Urania for help with his story. Raphael tells Adam that the world was created so God could replace the fallen angels that followed Satan. The Son is sent from Heaven and creates the world out of chaos. He finally hangs earth from heaven by a chain with the intent of earth and heaven eventually combining. Adam continues questioning Raphael on other matters and Eve leaves the conversation because she would rather hear Adam explain things. Raphael then tells Adam that humans aren’t supposed to know all of the mysteries of the universe but should instead focus on spiritual matters. Adam then recounts the memories from his own creation. God had commanded him not to eat from the Tree of Knowledge and had already given him knowledge of the names of the animals of the earth. He then explains his want for a companion and how he feels about Eve. Raphael then tells Adam to stay focused on his spiritual attraction to Eve rather than the physical attraction.
Quote:
And in herself complete, so well to know
Her own, that what she wills to do or say,
Seems wisest, virtuousest, discreetest, best:
All higher knowledge in her presence falls
Degraded; Wisdom in discourse with her
Loses discountenanced,
Question:
Could Adams explanation of his yearning for an equal to fellowship also reflect God’s yearning for equal fellowship within the trinity?
