Explantion of the song "Rape Me" by Nirvana

Do you not see the irony in the title? The word "rape" has many other possible meanings other than sexual intercourse, yet that is all we choose to see. http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=rape Rape is essentially something forced. So to say "rape me" would imply willingness which would negate the word of it's meaning. To me that is the beauty of the song. I can't really say for sure what the intended meaning of the song was, after all, most of Nirvana's lyrics are incoherent. I just know that i love irony and i love when the use of an offensive word causes me to rethink my preconcieved notions of the meaning of that word.

Personally i see the song as a reference to emotions, not sex. People put up walls in relationships. There are secerets we keep that deep down we want others to know; but if left to our own will we still hold on to the comfort of secerecy. The song is saying "take from me what i won't give you, but what deep down i want you to have." We fear vulnerability and exposure, but deep down we want to be vulnerable and exposed to that "special someone." What we sometimes long for is someone to forcefully tear down those emotional walls; even though we know we'll fight to keep them up.

i understand your explanation. I thought of something about your other post. I generally agree with it, but you have to use some pre learned ideas which is your definition of truth.
That is where the challenge is in many disagreements because each person may have a different definition of what truth is. The key, when discussing something with someone who you know may have a different frame of reference of truth, is to find out if there is a place where yours and theres(even if you don't agree with theirs)meet.
An example would be in your discussion about homosexuality. Now "we" come at the discussion from a Christian standpoint with the Bible as truth. Another person may not believe the Bible as literal. They may believe in Nature or the Bible but not totally(that's another discussion). My point would be if you look in any other animal species homosexual behavior is not apparent. GOD BLESS DAD

Good explanation.

Actually, homosexual acts do occur in the animal kingdom

Looking at the part starting with "The song is saying...." to the end. That's not necessarily true...
Well, maybe so just depending on the definition you are using when you say "special someone". But that of course just brings it back to how to the world 'makes' you veiw certain words, or subjects.

Yes but aren't they shunned by the rest of the herd, pack, etc.
Also has nothing to do with what were talking about, but on smallville tonite the guy who played Methos on "Highlander" is playing a international loan shark. He loaned 50,000 to Lois' sister Lucy(another unbelievable scenario). Thought I'd let you know.

Scott, I couldn't agree more. That's exactly the way that I see that song as well. Rock on!

Does the truth have any bearing on which way you go?
