9 We know that the law is not meant for a righteous person, but for the lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinful, for the unholy and irreverent, for those who kill their fathers and mothers, for murderers, 10 for the sexually immoral and homosexuals, for kidnappers, liars, perjurers, and for whatever else is contrary to the sound teaching 11 based on the glorious gospel of the blessed God that was entrusted to me. – 1Timothy 1:10-11
-I find this to be the most difficult verse to try and justify homosexuality. It is said so direct and frank that I can’t find any other way to interpret it. I suppose, if I was really reaching, I could refer back to verse 9 and try to say that only non-Christians are held to verses 9&10. To do that, however would require us to say that to murder, kidnapping, lieing, and perjuring are okay for Christians to do. This of course, is absurd to the umpteenth degree, and goes against more verses than I’m even gonna think of addressing. What verse 9 does point out is the importance of the old testament law, and, like Corinthians 6, how to differentiate a true believer from a false teacher. And this brings us to Romans 1:24-27
24 Therefore God delivered them over in the cravings of their hearts to sexual impurity, so that their bodies were degraded among themselves. 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served something created instead of the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 This is why God delivered them over to degrading passions. For even their females exchanged natural sexual intercourse for what is unnatural. 27 The males in the same way also left natural sexual intercourse with females and were inflamed in their lust for one another. Males committed shameless acts with males and received in their own persons the appropriate penalty for their perversion. Romans 1:24-27
-My friend said that these verses were only directed toward, and therefore only applied to the Roman church. After all, in Rome all types of sexual intercourse were common: orgies, homosexuality, incest, pedophilia, and all that good stuff. Therefore, these verses pointed out the danger of sex before marriage, and merely used homosexuality as an example of such.
-There are so many reasons why that belief does not hold any weight. Mainly, you can’t single out any part of the New Testament and claim that it applies exclusively to the church it was originally addressed to. If we allow this, then we might as well throw out everything past the 4 gospels. We can’t pick and choose what is truth and what isn’t. If one thing is false in any document, then it’s credibility is thrown out the window. If I didn’t like something said in any of Paul’s letters then I could just say, “that only applies to that church, and not myself.” I respect more, someone who dislikes the Bible, than someone who claims to believe the Bible, but only certain parts.
-Another point my friend made was that Jesus never spoke of homosexuality.
-So, for the sake of argument, I’m going to follow that logic. I’m going to throw everything out, and only address what Jesus says on the topic.
But not today.
