Pascal's Pensees184-241

We must prove religion to be true. One should seek to understand a religion before attacking it. Christians are happier than atheists. We all must die and it is only natural that we spend our life seeking the answer to what occurs after death. To not be assured of one’s afterlife should be cause for great sadness rather than the arrogance that often accompanies such statements. Only those who either serve God because they know Him or those who seek Him because they do not know them can be considered reasonable. Since we shall die alone we shall live our lives without seeking the approval of other men but rather seek truth without hesitation. We should not ignore the Divine revelation of scripture. Whether the soul is Immortal or immortal makes a difference on the subject of morality yet many philosophers ignore that fact. Since it is easier to reproduce something rather than produce it then it should not be more difficult to believe that a man could come back from the dead or that a virgin birth should occur. Since our life consists of engaging in uncertainties then the uncertainty of Christianity should not be a deterrent. God has left us signs of His will; therefore we are responsible to seek him. It is far worse to have been mistaken and find Christianity to be true than to have not mistaken and found Christianity to be true.

Quote:

Between us and heaven or hell there is only life, which is the frailest thing in the world.

Question:

Does Pascal’s attempts at rationalizing Christianity do more harm or good for his cause? Does he truly provide logical and rational arguments?

Does the truth have any bearing on which way you go?
